Young people from across the UK recently participated in our first Environmental Leaders weekend at Hindleap Warren. In partnership with Ambition our aim was to bring together a diverse range of youth organisations interested in developing environmental projects at their respective clubs. In total 38 young people and 10 youth workers participated from youth groups in Northern Ireland, Oxford and the London boroughs of Greenwich, Lambeth and Camden.

Combining the experience, skills and knowledge of Hindleap’s instructors and our Programmes team the tailor-made weekend incorporated both environmental learning and youth leadership skills, aimed at inspiring and encouraging young people to become environmental champions.

The weekend was split into three distinctive parts; environmental learning that included activities such as bushcraft, forest walks and fire lighting; Peer facilitated workshops that supported each club in developing a framework for an achieveable environmental project; and a individual learning assessment as part of the ASDAN Environmental Leaders accreditation.

After an intensive weekend of exploring ideas and environmental experiences the young people and youth workers now have the building blocks to initiate the first stages of a realistic environmental project upon their return to their clubs.
