London Youth and The Garrick Club support young people to attend a performance of Wicked

It was Wicked! Thanks to funding from The Garrick Club, the London Youth Arts & Creative Development Team was able to offer young Londoners the chance to attend the matinee performance of Wicked at The Apollo Victoria Theatre on 27th July 2022.

Working with the Garrick Club, not only were we able to provide free tickets to 82 young people and youth workers from 6 youth & community organisations, support costs were covered for each organisation’s travel, refreshments and staff time.

We believe that all young people deserve easy and affordable access to the theatre. With the UK art curriculum continuously and increasingly squeezed, theatres should be looking to youth organisations to offer their education bookings and/or free tickets as well. However, the costs associated with taking a youth group on a musical theatre trip are far beyond the expense of the tickets and can be a huge barrier. Removing those barriers through this funding was a dream.

This was a significant opportunity for the young people who experienced it. One of the young people who attended said, ‘It was fabulous, it was breathtaking’. She is an avid fashion expert who makes dresses and has a keen interest in costume design. ‘I was blown away and inspired by the Emerald City design! The costumes were amazing’. Another young person who attended said it was his first ever musical and loved it.

Being part of the audience with the group was very special. Seeing and hearing their reactions was joyous. The impact of this trip will continue to ripple through their lives and will hopefully be the beginning of many beautiful lifelong relationships with the theatre.
