fbpx MyLondon: Clubs teeter on the brink of closure - London Youth

08 January 2021

MyLondon has published an article on the impact of COVID-19 on the youth sector and the feared impact on violence affecting young people.

The article references our report Running on Reserves, which highlighted the impact of COVID on our members.

In the last six months, a report compiled by the charity London Youth found nearly a third of its 650 member organisations could ‘struggle to operate’ and more than a quarter were in difficulty with running costs.

The same report expressed a concern at the risk of an increase in youth violence and involvement in gangs when lockdown ends.

Rosemary Watt-Wyness, our Chief Executive was also quoted:

We know there will be an even greater reliance on youth clubs this year, yet so many organisations are reporting uncertainty as to whether they can financially survive.

There is a real risk they will go under at a time when our young people need them more than ever. With so many smaller youth clubs at risk of closure, it’s crucial that the Government releases the £500 million committed to the sector as soon as possible.”
