We’re delighted that 2014 has already bought recognition in the Queen's New Year Honours List for our committed and generous Deputy Chair, Roger Merton. Roger has been awarded an MBE for his services to London Youth, football and the community of Hertfordshire.
Roger became a trustee of London Youth in 2004 and has been Deputy Chair since 2011. He’s been on our Finance Committee since 2009 and was on the Safety and Safeguarding Committee between 2005 and 2008.
Roger has been involved in Youth Work for over 50 years, including in the past being Hon. Treasurer and then Chairman of a Youth Club.He was in his industry for 50 years and still acts as an adviser to the trade. He was Master of his Livery Company in 1996/97 and is at present a Trustee of their Benevolent Fund.
His other interests, apart from his family, include supporting his local football club, Hoddesdon Town Football Club, where he has been a member of the Committee since 1979 and chairman since 1994. He is also a Trustee of the local Citizens’ Advice Bureau, joining the Ware branch over 30 years ago and retiring as honourary treasurer of East Herts Citizens Advice Service in 2011.
Ever humble, Roger was quoted in the Hertfordshire Mercury saying;
“I’m actually chuffed. It was out of the blue.
“Hopefully, the award recognises the organisation in which I am involved as well. It’s not just me. It’s a team.
“I couldn’t do all this without my wife and everyone else supporting me.”
A huge Congratulations to Roger from all at London Youth! We’re really proud that you are our Deputy Chair. Thank you for everything you do for London Youth and for young Londoners.
