Wednesday 26 November

To celebrate #iwill week and a year of Step Up To Serve, we plan to share a different social action experience each day. Today’s highlights come from our Build-it programme.

Build-it is a multi-partner programme funding by the Big Lottery Fund and led by London Youth which gives young people in the London Borough of Lambeth the chance to learn skills and access training, work experience and real employment opportunities within the regeneration of their local communities.

Since launching in April 2013, the programme has worked with 861 young people and counting with 24% of participants leaving the programme to get employment and a further 25% leaving to go into further education or training. Build-it have worked on 15 different sites across Lambeth including turning an old meals on wheels kitchen into a community space on Brixton Green and repainting Deronda Estate Community Centre.

Below are just some ways you can find out about the stories and experiences of young people and staff who have taken part in the programme:

Hear from young people Robyn, Uche, Prince and Rachel who were all involved in the early days of the Build-it programme about their experiences and from James Alexander, Head of Build-it, about how the programme supports young people.

Read about some of Build-it young people Sam, Shaqueele, Jay and David who have all come through the programme and gained invaluable experience through working within their local communities.

And finally hear from a young person, a youth worker and a Build-it Delivery Officer in the video below about their experience of the programme while working on the Right Track Project. The Right Track Project is part of the Oasis Children’s Venture, who are also a London Youth member.
