Guest blog: Creating Inclusive Spaces for LGBTQ+ Young People
13 February 2025
We are Free2B Alliance, a London-based community interest company and London Youth member dedicated to supporting LGBTQ+ young people and their families. Through one-to-one and group services in schools and the community, we create safe spaces where young people can explore their identities, connect with others, and thrive.
Beyond direct support, we actively challenge homophobia, biphobia, and transphobia while providing LGBTQ+ awareness training to schools and organisations, helping to build more inclusive environments.
Our work is driven by our mission to improve LGBTQ+ lives by providing responsive wellbeing support, safe spaces, and proactive education, empowering local communities to address discrimination.
We are proud to be a London Youth Bronze Accredited organisation, recognised for delivering high-quality, inclusive youth services with strong safeguarding practices. Being part of the London Youth network allows us to connect with other youth-focused organisations and broaden opportunities for the LGBTQ+ young people we support. Through London Youth, we are also able to offer our members inclusive residential experiences where they can build confidence and new skills in a safe space.
Why Our Work is Important
LGBTQ+ young people continue to face significant challenges, making safe spaces like Free2B vital for their wellbeing. According to the Just Like Us Report 2021 data:
- 68% of LGBTQ+ youth have contemplated suicide.
- 51% have experienced an anxiety disorder.
- 47% have experienced depression.
- 91% have heard negative language about being LGBTQ+ in the past year.
These statistics highlight the urgent need for safe, inclusive environments where young people can be themselves without fear. Through our services, we work directly with young people, parents, schools, and youth professionals to create spaces where LGBTQ+ youth can thrive.
Our Impact in 2024
- 255 young people supported through our youth groups and one-to-one mentoring.
- 134 pupils reached across 10 school forums.
- 24 parents supported through Proud Parents groups and workshops.
- 300+ people attended our training, with an average feedback rating of 9.2 out of 10.
LGBTQ+ History Month: Activism and Social Change
As we celebrate LGBT+ History Month and this year’s theme of Activism and Social Change, we’d like to highlight the amazing work of Rainbow Power, who embody these values every day.
Rainbow Power is the Free2B youth council, made up of young people working on social action projects and shaping Free2B’s services to ensure they meet the needs of LGBTQ+ youth. These incredible young people are shaping a brighter future through advocacy, education, and creativity. From challenging stereotypes to creating safe spaces, Rainbow Power demonstrate how the voices of young people can drive real change.
Developing LGBTQ+ Inclusive Environments
Safe, accessible, and nonjudgmental spaces are vital for LGBTQ+ young people. Whether leading a youth group, teaching in a school, or offering support services, small changes can make a big difference in helping a young person feel included.
Rainbow Power developed five simple steps to create more inclusive learning spaces—but these principles apply beyond the classroom and can help any youth worker ensure their services are accessible and welcoming for LGBTQ+ youth:
- Make us visible – Representation matters. Display LGBTQ+ resources, celebrate LGBTQ+ history, and ensure diversity is reflected in your space. Visibility helps young people feel acknowledged and safe.
- Listen to LGBTQ+ voices – Take young people seriously when they share their experiences and needs. Their insight is key to shaping truly inclusive spaces.
- Use the correct pronouns – Pronouns matter. Using the right ones shows respect and affirms identity.
- Use chosen names – A name is a core part of someone’s identity. Using the name a young person chooses fosters belonging and respect.
- If you get something wrong, apologise and move on – Mistakes happen, but what matters is how we respond. A simple apology and a commitment to do better go a long way.
By integrating these small but important steps into everyday youth work, professionals can help LGBTQ+ young people feel valued, respected, and supported.

Building a More Inclusive Future
At Free2B, we are committed to creating safe spaces, increasing awareness, and ensuring LGBTQ+ young people feel empowered. Through youth groups, 1-1 support, training, and parent support, we will continue working alongside young people, their families, schools, and professionals to build a more inclusive future.
