Back & Forth
Brief:Check-in activity
Equipment: Tennis ball and rackets [or] football [or] basketball etc.
Step by Step
- Choose a preferred sport that the young person enjoys.
- Pass or hit whichever ball back and forth to one another.
- You can now ask the young person to tell you a story from their day where a situation didn’t go as planned or just generally how they are doing. You can then work through solutions as you talk or different reactions.
Things to Consider
You may wish to add in learning skills from the chosen sport together.
Explainer
Doing something physical at the same time as talking can split the focus of a person to reduce fear of judgement when talking about things. It is also a great way to help someone open up and think though different outcomes, at the same time as improving motor skills and coordination.
