Supporting young people to become peer mentors

29 February, 9:30 am - 12:30 pm

Peer mentoring offers young people a chance to talk about the things that matter to them, problem solve and develop critical thinking skills with someone of a similar age, either in school, the community or via virtual platforms. For the peer mentors themselves it provides a great opportunity to develop their skills as they take on new responsibilities as a positive role model.

With many youth organisation’s and schools looking to set up their own peer mentoring schemes, this 3-hour webinar is designed to help. It explores motivations for volunteering, the process of peer mentoring, ways to train and support young volunteers, as well as clarifying the mutual responsibilities and benefits that make it work so well.

Delivered in a ‘train the trainer’ style, the topics covered in the session can be used as a basis for training young volunteers, as well as understanding some of the potential barriers to success and how to overcome them.

Learning outcomes

  • Understand what peer mentoring is and the mutual benefits of peer mentoring to both the mentor and mentee.
  • Explore the roles and responsibilities of peer mentors and the adults that will be supporting them.
  • Investigate the training and support required for young people to become peer mentors.
  • Identify boundary and confidentiality issues to keep mentors and mentees safe.
  • Offer ideas for the development of an effective peer-mentoring scheme.
