‘Invisible Girls’, Gangs and Exploitation
21 May, 9:30 am - 12:30 pm
Free2023 research by The Commission on Young Lives and Manchester Metropolitan University revealed that tens of thousands of girls in England are vulnerable to serious violence, sexual assault and exploitation within gangs, whilst remaining largely unknown to prevention services typically aimed at boys.
‘Invisible Girls’, Gangs and Exploitation
This workshop specifically focuses on the experiences of young women. It considers what makes them ‘invisible’, the potential drivers of vulnerability and what needs change to ensure they get the support they need. Complex, often relationship driven, we will explore how young women are groomed and exploited into gang association, the roles they can play and what makes it appear attractive to some. We will also consider wider perceptions of choice, autonomy and consent, which can lead to victim blaming and take the focus off perpetrators, along with potential indicators of grooming and criminal coercion.
Finally, we will look at what we can learn from evidence-based research and serious case reviews, including Rotherham, as well as legislation intended to keep children safe.
Learning outcomes:
- Raised awareness of how gangs target, groom and coerce girls and young women for Child Criminal and Sexual Exploitation (CSE and CCE).
- Ways that gender stereotypes about appropriate female behaviour contribute to ‘victim blaming’ and young women becoming ‘invisible’.
- Potential indicators that young women are associating with gangs / county lines.
- Practical tips for engaging young women and girls in protective conversations and risk planning to stay safe.
- Evidence of ‘what works’ and good practice in prevention and intervention.
- How to report concerns so young women are not overlooked and where to refer for advice and support.
