Educating young people about the influence and impact of online porn

20/01/2023, 9:30 am - 12:30 pm

Young people’s easy access to porn and the abundance of sexualised images both in mainstream and social media continues to provoke concern. Not just in terms of its potentially negative influence and impact on expectations of real-life relationships and sex, but also its lack of inclusivity and promotion of unrealistic body norms. In addition, many believe pornography, with its traditional focus on male pleasure, is contributing to wider gender-based stereotypes. Whilst some might think it harmless fun or simply a rite of passage, learning about sex and relationships from porn can leave young people feeling anxious and emotionally insecure as well as confused about the difference between fantasy and real-life. Traditionally a difficult topic to talk about, this online workshop aims to equip youth workers with practical tips, ideas and information to engage young people in the debate to understand the difference between pornography and real-life relationships and develop the skills to make healthy choices.

LEARNING OUTCOMES:
• The influence of porn in popular culture
• How porn and sexualised images can influence young people’s expectations of themselves and others
• Consider ways that porn can contribute to stereotypes about race and gender
• Discuss the wider impact of porn on consent, sexual health and expectations of sexual norms
• The laws currently in place to protect children and young people from online harm, including porn
• Practical ways to approach this emotive topic with young people.
