DWP Social Security Advisory Committee: Young People Living Independently
24 May 2018
In this report published by the Department for Work & Pensions’ Social Security Advisory Committee, London Youth’s research on ‘hidden’ young people is quoted. Hidden young people are not in education, employment, or training and are not receiving any statutory welfare support. We estimate that there may be as many as 480,000 young people in this situation across the country.
The report recommends that DWP should “monitor the numbers of 16 to 24-year olds living independently who are eligible for but not in receipt of benefit.” This aligns with our own recommendation that government hidden young people should be “government reporting mechanisms should be updated to reflect the true nature of youth employment and unemployment.”
