Every young person deserves high-quality, open-access youth work in their local community.

Our Champion London Youth campaign shines a light on the positive stories of young Londoners that are all too often overlooked. Youth clubs improve the physical, mental and social wellbeing of young people from all backgrounds. For many young people their youth worker plays a critical role during their transition to adulthood, in a space beyond education and the home.

However, over the last eight years, youth services have been cut drastically and it is young people who have suffered. Local authority youth service budgets across London in 2017/18 were £39 million lower than they were in 2011/12, representing an average cut of £1.5 million or 44% per local authority. During this period, 81 youth centres closed and 800 youth workers have been lost.

Dear Minister,
As the new Youth Minister, we are calling on you to champion London youth by supporting youth services. You can find out more about our Champion London Youth campaign to combat negative youth stereotypes.
Every young person deserves to have high quality, open access youth services in their local community. Youth services support young people’s physical, mental, and social wellbeing. They connect young people to their communities, provide positive opportunities and relationships, and they help young people become happy and healthy adults. In short, youth services have a truly transformative impact on young lives.
The last decade has been hard for youth services and young people have suffered. In London alone, there is a minimum of £39 million less being spent each year, meaning there are at least 800 fewer youth workers transforming young people’s lives each day. We must protect a vital part of our social infrastructure or risk failing a generation.
It’s time to ensure that every single young person in London has a place close by where they can be safe, have fun, learn, develop, and get the support they need. We are calling for next year’s Spending Review to include a heavy reinvestment in youth work and to unlock the potential in every single young person.
