Building confidence and kitchens
22 March 2016
Since January Build-it has been working in Clapham North, renovating a ground floor flat for Hyde Housing. 15-18 young people aged between 18-25 years old were involved in this project, developing basic plumbing skills by installing kitchen and bathroom sinks, prepping walls to be decorated and attending our carpentry workshop held by our on-site mentors. The next steps were to paint the walls and get trained in some tiling work and building basic kitchen units. During their time on the programme, the young people got to experience a range of different trades, work on their time management and team work, pick up ordered material with our mentors and develop their general knowledge about construction.
“It helped me improve my multi trade skills such as plumbing, painting and decorating and it put me on the right track to get me a legit job”– Malachi, Build-it Participant.
Our next two projects include building paths to outdoor Gym equipment across Lambeth for Lambeth Housing and in Southwark where we will be decorating the communal areas of a hostel.
