Adventure for All at Hindleap Warren
05 December 2016
Last weekend Hindleap Warren, based in the Ashdown Forest in East Sussex, hosted the annual national conference for Adventure for All.
Adventure for All is a group of outdoor learning providers who have in-depth knowledge and experience of working with people with additional needs and disabilities. The organisation was created 27 years ago as a formally constituted association, with Hindleap having been a member for the last 17 years.
Over the weekend Hindleap welcomed delegates from six different outdoor education providers, all individuals who are experts in the field of adventure activities. The format of the weekend was a mixture of workshop sessions on equipment developments and working practices, and a number of business sessions on furthering links with the Institute of Outdoor Learning and developing the Climbing for the disabled national course. Alongside this there was a workshop on developing a special harness for people unable to use a normal climbing harness. Discussion also took place on designing special buoyancy aids and adapting archery equipment to better allow inclusive activities.
The Centres involved over the weekend were Calvert Trust, Kielder, Keswick and Exmoor, Bendrigg Trust from Kendal and QE2 Centre from Southampton. There was also representation from the Institute for Outdoor Learning and several equipment manufacturers.
Overall it was a great weekend with new developments and lots of sharing of good practice and new ideas, thank you to all who were able to attend. We look forward to the next Adventure for All conference next year!
